Representations in moving-image media

Throughout the whole platform of moving image media, there are many representations that can be portrayed other than just the usual including age, ethnicity, gender and class. Instead, representations can be made on so much more including the areas and countries in which people live in and places in which they work.

Representations on people can be made especially through mise en scene. This includes through the use of crops and outfits that the people represented use or wear. For example when black members of a cast  relating to a particular genre movie e.g. black history, they tend to wear poor looking clothing and always seem to be doing some type of cleaning or childminding to help represent slavery. Mise en scene is also used to help great enigma towards audiences and help dramatise what may be taking place. It also helps to trigger an emotive response from audiences allowing them to feel more engaged with the members of the cast. Another way representations can be made in moving-image media is through the settings of the scenes. for example, if a person is shown to live in a rich area or to have expensive items they are then represented as wealthy and shown to be above everyone else.

Within this trailer, you can begin to see a clear division on the representations portrayed. For example a division is made between the caucasian and black people though the way they're dressed ( mise en scene), the housing as well as even the language used. I know this because within the trailer, the black people appear to be wearing raggedy clothing with lots of holes highlighting lack of money and care. where as the caucasians were wearing rich looking clothes to help indicate their wealth, again showing a clear division between the two ethnicities. From my own knowledge, I know that during the era in which the setting of the move is made in, the caucasians were seen as a priority over the black people and therefore thought it was acceptable to use them as slaves.
